Exindium Alt Text Manager Documentation

1. Installation

Installing and activating the Exindium Alt Text Manager plugin is quick and straightforward. Follow the steps below to get started:

Install from WordPress

  1. Go to Plugins → Add Plugin in your WordPress dashboard.
  2. Search for Exindium Alt Text Manager.
  3. Click Install Now, then Activate.

The plugin is now ready to use.

Manual Installation

  1. Download the plugin ZIP file from the WordPress.org repository.
  2. Go to Plugins → Add Plugin → Upload Plugin.
  3. Upload the ZIP file and click Install Now.
  4. Activate the plugin when installation is complete.

2. Overview

The Overview gives you a quick snapshot of alt text coverage across your WordPress media library.

It shows:

  • Total images in the current media library view
  • Images that are missing alt text
  • Current alt text coverage

Use the available actions to move directly to images that need attention. If media changes are not yet reflected in the statistics, click Refresh Statistics to clear the cached counts and sync the Overview with the current media library state.

Overview statistics are cached for 24 hours to reduce repeated database work.

3. Managing Alt Text

Use the “Missing Alt Text” and “Alt Text Present” tabs to review and manage image alt text without opening individual media attachment pages.

Missing Alt Text

This view shows images that currently have no alt text. Use it to find images that need attention and add alt text directly from the dashboard.

Alt Text Present

This view shows images that already have alt text assigned. Use it to review or update existing values.

Editing an Image

Type or update the alt text in the image row, then save the change directly from the dashboard. You can also open the full-size image in a new browser tab when you need more visual context before writing alt text.

Copy from Filename

Use the Copy Filename action beside an image to generate a cleaned alt text value from its filename. This is useful as a starting point when the filename already describes the image.

Filename-generated text is a fallback or starting point. For meaningful images, descriptive alt text written for the image and its context is recommended

Working with Multiple Images

Select images and choose “Auto-fill from Filename” from the Bulk Actions menu to generate and save cleaned filename-based alt text for the selected images.

Manual selections are limited to the number of images currently displayed by your per-page setting. Select All selects all images displayed within that limit, and selections are cleared when you move to another page.

For larger automatic operations across all images that are currently missing alt text, use the dedicated Bulk Tools tab.

4. Bulk Tools

Bulk Tools can generate filename-based alt text for images that are currently missing it.

Starting a Bulk Process

When a bulk process starts, Exindium Alt Text Manager queries the current number of images missing alt text directly rather than relying on the cached Overview statistics.

The operation processes images in batches and does not overwrite images that already have alt text.

Pause and Resume

A running bulk process can be paused and resumed. Progress is saved so the operation can continue after a page reload or interruption.

When a saved operation is resumed, the plugin reconciles it with the current media library state. Images that no longer need alt text are skipped rather than overwritten.

Completed Operations

When processing reaches 100%, the completed state remains visible so you can confirm that the operation finished successfully. Leaving the tab or refreshing the page returns you to the normal Bulk Tools view.

5. Settings

Settings control how filename-based alt text is generated and whether it should be applied automatically to new uploads.

Automatic Alt Text on Upload

Existing alt text is preserved and is not replaced by this setting.

Enable this option to use the image filename as a fallback when a newly uploaded image does not already contain alt text.

Filename Cleanup Style

  • Keep Filename Formatting – keeps the stored filename formatting while removing the file extension and WordPress-generated final -scaled suffix.
  • Clean Spaces & Caps – converts dots, underscores, and hyphens into spaces and capitalizes words.
  • Clean & Strip Numbers – applies the cleaned formatting and removes standalone numeric values while preserving numbers that are part of words, such as PS5 or iPhone18.

Choose how filenames are formatted when they are used to generate alt text:

6. Multilingual Support

Exindium Alt Text Manager supports media libraries using WPML Media Translation and Polylang Media.

When a specific admin language is selected, the plugin follows that language context and displays the corresponding media entries and alt text. Changes to translated media versions remain independent according to the media translation structure provided by the multilingual plugin.

A multilingual plugin is not required to use Exindium Alt Text Manager. Language-specific media metadata requires the corresponding media translation functionality in your multilingual setup.

The Overview statistics also follow the selected language. When all languages are being viewed, the Overview displays the corresponding combined media library statistics.

7. Developer Guide

By default, access to the Alt Text Manager admin area requires the WordPress manage_options capability, which normally restricts access to Administrators.

Developers can change the required capability using the exatm_minimum_capability filter.

Example:

add_filter( ‘exatm_minimum_capability’, function() {return ‘upload_files’; } );

Add the filter through your child theme’s functions.php, a site-specific functionality plugin, or your preferred code snippets solution.

Only grant access to trusted roles that should be able to manage media alt text.

Bulk Tools Batch Size

Bulk Tools processes 25 images per batch by default. Developers can adjust the batch size using the exatm_bulk_batch_size filter. The minimum supported value is 1.

Example:

add_filter( ‘exatm_bulk_batch_size’, function() {return 50; } );

Larger batches may complete more quickly on capable servers, but they also increase the work performed by each request. Choose a value appropriate for the hosting environment.

8. Troubleshooting

The Overview statistics are cached for 24 hours. Click Refresh Statistics on the Overview tab to clear the cached counts and sync them with the current media library state.

Progress is saved. Return to Bulk Tools and resume the operation. The plugin will reconcile the saved operation with the current media library state before continuing.

Refresh the page and try again. If the problem continues, check for another plugin or server configuration interfering with WordPress admin requests, and review the browser console for relevant JavaScript errors.

Confirm that the current user has the capability required to access and manage Alt Text Manager. If the user normally has access, refresh the page and try again in case the WordPress security token for the session has expired.

Check the selected Filename Cleanup Style in Settings. You can change the cleanup style and then generate the filename-based text again where appropriate.
